At the crossroads of change: why residential treatment might be the best option for your troubled military child

As a military family, change is part of the package. Whether it’s a new base, a different school, or a completely foreign community, your family knows what it’s like to constantly adapt. But while military life fosters resilience, it can also present challenges — especially for children with severe mental illness or behavioral issues.

Frequent moves, new social circles, and changing environments can lead to a sense of instability and can make treating behavioral and mental health challenging. The family unit suffers and feels helpless as their child gets expelled, has frequent outbursts, and standard treatment fails.

Sometimes, no matter how well we think we’re handling things as parents, our children need more than we can offer. The usual advice — keep communication open, stay involved, establish routines, go to weekly therapy — may not be enough when a child is facing deeper emotional or mental health issues. For military families, seeking outside help can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re constantly moving. But it’s important to know that you don’t have to navigate these challenges alone.

Here’s a story you may relate to:

“Our granddaughter has been a resident at Youth Home for the past eight months, and sadly, this wasn’t her first stay in a residential treatment facility. Between her and her sister, we’ve interacted with six different facilities across three different states. Youth Home, by far, has been the most professionally run and dedicated facility we’ve worked with.

As a health care provider myself, I have high expectations of medical care standards, and your facility has not only met but easily surpassed those expectations. The structure Youth Home provides is phenomenal. They set clear expectations for the children and offer the encouragement needed to meet them. What impressed us most is that what Youth Home advertises is exactly what they deliver.

Our granddaughter’s diagnosis required specific treatment, and Youth Home was upfront from day one about what they could and could not do. Not only do they treat the patient, but they focus on healing the family as well. We’ve been provided with invaluable resources and referrals to ensure lasting success after her discharge.”

Youth Home: A Place for Military Kids with Behavioral Issues or Mental Illness to Find Stability and Support

That’s where Youth Home comes in — a place designed to help military kids with severe mental illness and their families regain their footing. At Youth Home, we understand the unique pressures military life and behavioral disorders place on families, especially on children. Our residential treatment program provides a stable, supportive environment where children can heal, grow, and develop the skills they need for a brighter future.

What makes Youth Home especially beneficial for military families whose children have behavioral disorders or severe mental illness?

Full Support

  • Youth Home offers a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your child’s specific needs. We address not only their emotional and psychiatric needs but also their academic and social development. Our multifaceted approach has proven to be highly effective—none of our clients have been readmitted in the past two years.
  • We involve the child in their own treatment plan from the very beginning, rather than simply telling them what to do. This approach creates more successful results, giving them the tools they need to take ownership over their wellbeing.

Rated 4.6/5 by Parents

Every parent is surveyed at the time of discharge and 6 months following. The results are clear:

  • Youth Home provides far more opportunities for therapy than what is considered standard, offering 2 individual, family, group, and numerous recreational groups sessions per week.
  • We know that healing a child also means supporting the family. From the start, we work closely with parents and guardians to ensure that everyone is involved in the healing process. Our family therapy sessions and resources help rebuild family dynamics and prepare everyone for long-term success after treatment.

Friendly, Home-Like Campus

  • Military life can sometimes feel like anything but “home.” At Youth Home, we strive to create a nurturing, home-like atmosphere. With cozy cottages, freshly prepared meals from our onsite culinary team, and therapeutic activities, we ensure your child feels safe, supported, and cared for—just like family.
  • Our therapeutic activities are enjoyed in a beautiful, safe, and comfortable 52-acre campus (if we aren’t out having fun at the zoo, skate park, local assisted living homes, and more.)

Safety & Protection

  • Every member of our staff, from therapists to chefs, is trained in trauma-informed care, ensuring your child receives compassionate, knowledgeable support.
  • With a 4:1 staff-to-child ratio, we provide individualized attention that helps each child feel valued and heard (compared to the 6:1 ratio required by regulating bodies).
  • Safety is the highest priority at Youth Home, for staff and clients, alike, and we ensure safety at all times with 24/7 video monitoring.

Change for the Better

Yes, change is hard. But with the right support, it can also be the catalyst for growth and healing. At Youth Home, we’ve seen firsthand how children can thrive when given the right treatment, tools and environment. If your family is struggling to cope with your child’s mental illness or behavioral issues, we’re here to help.

By providing structure, stability, and therapeutic care, Youth Home helps military kids regain their confidence and learn new ways to handle life’s challenges. Whether it’s dealing behavioral issues, complex mental health disorders or attachment disorders, we’re here to support your child—and your family—every step of the way.

Are you ready to make a change for the better?  Let us take the burden off your shoulders, and replace it with the tools you need to help your child succeed. Contact Youth Home today.
