Military kids, the Biden Foundation wants to tell your story!
The Biden Foundation announced a new campaign to share the unique perspective of today’s military children. “Picturing Home” invites students from around the country and world to submit artwork, photography, and written pieces that explain how they picture home. Select submissions will be highlighted on the Biden Foundation’s website and social media channels beginning this month, in honor of the Month of the Military Child.
An exceptional story to share
The average military family moves every two to three years. This means kids are changing schools, making new friends, and adapting to new communities. Dr. Jill Biden, a military mom, worked directly on issues connected to these relocations when she led Joining Forces. Now, she is continuing those efforts through the Foundation.
“We recognize military kids and thank them for the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe. We also recognize the value of building bridges between military-connected and civilian children. Through Picturing Home, we celebrate the beauty of what makes our students unique — but we also celebrate those things that make us more similar than we think,” Dr. Biden said in a press release.
Military families as a central focus
The Foundation has added supporting military families as a core pillar of its present-day work. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Biden outlined priorities to remain committed to military-connected topics, such as the well-being of military children, employability of military spouses, and wellness for the entire family.
“While leading Joining Forces, Dr. Biden had the opportunity to travel around the United States and the world to visit with our service members, veterans, and their families. These experiences were incredibly powerful for Dr. Biden, who is a military mom herself. Supporting military families is something that Dr. Biden considers to be a life-long commitment, and she hopes to use her work at the Foundation to further these efforts,” Rory Brosius, Biden Foundation advisor for Military Families, said in an email to Military Families Magazine.
How to participate in the Biden Foundation campaign
Submissions can be made directly online throughout the entire month of April.
“Our ultimate goal of Picturing Home is to celebrate our military and civilian children and raise awareness about their experiences in their communities and homes. We know the majority of military kids do not live on military bases, so it is important to us that their communities know about them and learn how to best support them. We want to celebrate the things that make military kids unique, while also celebrating their ties to their broader communities …,” Mala Adiga, Biden Foundation policy director for Military Families, explained.
