Incorporating patriotic themes into holiday decorating can be a fun way to refresh your seasonal look and celebrate the joy of the season while acknowledging the freedoms and values we hold dear. It’s also a nice way to pay tribute to family members who served or are serving. Plus, blending existing holiday décor with a patriotic theme is simple, too. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Swap out traditional holiday colors
Red and green might be the most common holiday color palette but pairing red with white and blue creates a patriotic yet festive look. You can start small by swapping a few ornaments on your tree for red, white and blue versions. It’s also fun to add glittered stars or glass ornaments patterned like the American flag for subtle patriotic touches (bonus if you handcraft these yourself as part of a unit gathering or with your military kids).
Garlands and wreaths are another great way to create patriotic flair. On a white or evergreen wreath, you can add patriotic accents, such as ribbon ties featuring the stars and stripes. On mantels, you could layer pine branches with red lights, miniature flags, and silver stars for décor that still feels wintery but also shows your love of our country.
Mix traditions with personal touches
The key to blending patriotic and traditional holiday décor is balance. Too much red, white and blue might make your décor look overwhelming and could distract from the cozy, nostalgic feelings that traditional holiday décor brings to a home. That’s why it is essential to layer patriotic themes and colors with more traditional items.
Personalized stockings with patriotic images or colors can easily blend into the rest of your décor. Plus, there are so many options when it comes to stockings—including branch-specific options available at base exchanges. You can find everything from stockings with red, white and blue sequins to embroidered bald eagles, depending on what you are looking for.
Add symbolic pieces to your holiday collections
If you have a holiday collection, whether it’s a winter village, train sets, or ceramic trees, adding a piece with a military theme can give your décor even more meaning. The good news is that it is easier than ever to find unique pieces online or through local craft makers who would be happy to add customized colors and themes to traditional holiday collectibles.
One of my favorite decorations is our soldier nutcracker that was gifted to us years ago. I have at least 10 other nutcrackers throughout our home, but my kids love the soldier best because they say he “looks like daddy.” Even though it’s a smaller item, it still holds a great deal of meaning, which makes holiday décor so special.

Deck the halls in red, white and blue
The holidays are a time to celebrate family and traditions, but they can also be an excellent opportunity to showcase your personal values and honor what matters most to you. Incorporating red, white and blue, as well as other patriotic themes, into your holiday décor is a fun way to celebrate the season while paying tribute to the spirit of service in the U.S. military.
