At Tutor.com/military, we are honored to provide learning support to military families. Our tutors connect 1-to-1 with learners around the world, from kindergarten through college and beyond. We are proud to share three stories of learners we’ve worked with through the Tutor.com for U.S. Military Families program.
The Lum brothers, whose parents first learned about Tutor.com while stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, didn’t make their first 1-to-1 tutor connections until eight years and two PCSs later. At that time, they were stationed at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, Texas when the pandemic forced schools to close.
The boys — now in elementary, middle, and high school — became remote learners as their parents both worked full-time from home. Tutor.com/military became a dependable resource for developing early literacy and grammar skills, understanding fourth-grade math, and mastering high school algebra. Resilient and determined, they worked alongside their parents, getting help when and where they needed it.
We are also proud to share the story of Amber K., a straight-A student whose father was an ROTC instructor at Virginia Military Institute. Living in rural Virginia, far from a military base and other military families, Amber learned about Tutor.com/military from family friend when she was struggling to find resources for an English paper. Skeptical at first, she soon began connecting with tutors in other subjects, including her dual-enrollment calculus class.
“Tutor.com helped me work through the problems that I didn’t understand,” she said.
Amber graduated with honors and even received a Certificate of Excellence in calculus. Now in her third year at Arizona State University, Amber keeps Tutor.com bookmarked in case she needs it for her college coursework.
In addition to helping military families, we have the honor of supporting active-duty service members themselves. Patrick M. was in an online master’s degree program through American Military University while also serving in the military, including deployments and unconventional working hours. After completing sections of his master’s thesis, he would utilize the drop-off writing review service at Tutor.com.
“Tutor.com was an awesome resource,” he said. “I loved that I could just drop off my paper, go to bed, and when I woke up in the morning it was reviewed and waiting for me! Having the service available 24/7 was imperative, since I spent a good chunk of time deployed to the other side of the world. As long as I could get internet, I could get Tutor.com!”
Patrick successfully completed his master’s degree, and it has been valuable for his military career. To this day, he recommends the Tutor.com/military program to all of his fellow service members.
