Shaw Air Force Base, located in Sumter, South Carolina, is one of the oldest Air Force installations, originally established as a flying school in 1941. Surrounded by rich history, Shaw offers the unique opportunity of being centrally located in the Palmetto State. Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Savannah, Greenville, Atlanta, Hilton Head, Charlotte and the Blue Ridge Mountains are just some of the major locations close by.

South Carolina is split into three areas: Upstate, Midlands and Lowcountry. The Blue Ridge Mountains encompass most of the Upstate, whereas the Lowcountry is primarily coastal. Shaw, situated in the Midlands, receives a broad spectrum of temperatures and weather. Yes, even snow!

Throughout the year, military members can explore the outdoors on the nearby lakes, mountains or beaches. The area is perfect for day-trippers, families seeking small towns, history enthusiasts or young couples seeking adventure. Being close to the beach and mountains, Shaw offers the chance to make many memories while stationed there.

Quintessential small towns

The town of Sumter has several schooling options, and attractions like Swan Lake Iris Gardens and Patriot Park. The surrounding towns of Columbia, Camden, Elgin and Lugoff boast picturesque downtowns and landmarks. Camden, known as the “Steeplechase Capital of the World,” hosts several equine-related events, such as the Carolina Cup Races, throughout the year.

The areas around Shaw AFB aren’t just filled with horses, but history and adventure, too. Plan a visit to Sumter’s Historical District, the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site and Visitor’s Center, the State House, or Robert Mills House and Gardens.

Day trips and travel

Columbia

The closest major city, and the state capital, is Columbia, or COLA, as it’s often referred to by locals. Less than an hour from base, you’ll find local cuisine, like Bourbon, a popular Cajun-Creole restaurant and whiskey bar. You can also tour the State House, explore the Riverbanks Zoo, and enjoy several other family-friendly activities in Columbia. The city’s energy transforms on Saturdays when you can visit the Soda City Market, a popular year-round gathering of local makers, complete with plenty of food trucks.

Charlotte

If you’re looking for a day trip for food, shopping or activities, look no further than Charlotte, North Carolina. Located two hours away from Shaw and brimming with family fun, restaurants for date night or even a quick staycation, Charlotte offers everything from go-karting and museums to spas and rooftop bars. Other popular places there include the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Lazy 5 Ranch, the Whitewater Center, and the NC Transportation Museum.

Charleston

Explore the cobblestone streets of Charleston for the weekend. Less than two hours from Shaw AFB, military families can explore Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and several kid-friendly parks and playgrounds. Dine on mouth-watering Southern cuisine, enjoy horse-drawn carriage tours or shop on King Street and the market. Charleston and its historical downtown offer history, beaches, shopping and food choices to meet everyone’s interests.

Hilton Head

Want breathtaking sunsets, soft sand beaches, local food and resort stays? Escape to Hilton Head. This island spans roughly 12 miles long and is fewer than 5 miles wide, but it offers countless opportunities for R & R. Spend hours on the hundreds of miles of bike trails or relax on the beach at a nearby hotel. Hilton Head is located approximately two and a half hours from Shaw, and is the perfect weekend getaway.

Myrtle Beach

For family-friendly fun, many military members make the quick two-hour drive to Myrtle Beach for the weekend. With options like Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, where military members and their families (up to four guests) receive 30% off admission, Alligator Adventure Park, boardwalks and arcades, you’ll find something for any age. Book a water park hotel, play some mini-golf, or do some shopping. Several attractions, including Medieval Times, offer a discounted military rate, so be sure to ask when booking. Myrtle Beach is not short on entertainment!

Savannah

Looking for a picturesque weekend getaway full of history, outdoor adventure or even a ghost tour? Check out Savannah, Georgia. Located two and a half hours from Shaw AFB, Savannah offers dolphin tours, Southern cuisine, walking tours, and botanical gardens. Tour old forts, hike nearby trails, or explore local parks.
