How military bases will honor Sept. 11

The U.S. military community will commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in various ways around the globe. Below is a list of observances and tributes but check with local bases and news media to verify start times and other details.

U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys, South Korea

  • Choose between three routes at the “9/11 Remembrance Ruck March” at Balboni Field on Sept. 11: Shanksville (3.5 miles), Pentagon (7 miles) or Twin Towers (9.11 miles). Opening remarks begin at 0600 for this no-registration event on the soccer field, with the ruck march kicking off at 0730.

JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia

  • Run in the “9/11 Remembrance 5K Run” at JEB Little Creek MWR Fitness at the Little Creek – Rockwell Hall Gym in Virginia Beach on Sept. 11 at 0800. Sponsored by First Command and USAA, registration opens at 0700, and the race will begin after colors. Call 757-462-7735 for more information.

Luke AFB, Arizona

  • The Bryant Fitness Center on Shooting Star will host the “9/11 Tower 2 Tower Challenge” from 0500 to 1800 on Sept. 11. The challenge, free and open to all who sign up by Sept. 9, involves climbing 110 flights of stairs, the same amount as the World Trade Center. Call 623-856-6241 or visit Facebook.
  • On Sept. 13 at 0600, race in the “Forever Strong Memorial Run” at the Fitness Center Track. Participants can run, ruck or walk, and trophies will be presented to male and female winners in 1st through 3rd

Fort Stewart, Georgia

  • On Tuesday, Sept. 3, climb 2,071 steps on the stair master at the Newman Fitness Center on 6th Street from 0900 to 1100 in the “9/11 Unity Climb.” Choose between a solo or team climb, in athletic or full gear. Don’t want to join in? Come cheer participants on as an observer.
  • On Saturday, Sept. 7, race in the Patriot Day 5K Run. All participants from either the climb or run can sign the 9/11 Unity Climb banner and will receive a free T-shirt.

Pentagon

  • Anyone in any location can hop on the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial Tour – 23rd Anniversary Livestream on Sept. 11 from 1600-1730 MST via Zoom. A member of Washington D.C. History & Culture will conduct the free tour, including 9/11 information and anecdotes. Tickets are available online.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington

  • From Sept. 9 to 11, the McVeigh Fitness Center will host the “JBLM 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Challenge,” inviting participants to climb 110 flights of stairs on their stair climbers. Make sure to sign up for your time block at the front desk before Sept. 9. Those who do so will earn a NEVER FORGET workout towel while supplies last. Call 253-967-5869 for more information.

Fort Knox, Kentucky

  • The base’s annual Patriot Day ceremony will be held at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central at 0815 on Sept. 11 in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. Maj. Gen. Johnny Davis, commanding general of U.S. Army Recruiting Command and Fort Knox and a soldier involved in 9/11 search and rescue efforts, will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will feature a ceremonial tolling of the Fort Knox Fire Station bell, wreath-laying, a 21-gun artillery salute and the playing of Taps.

NAS Jacksonville, Florida

  • The base will host an untimed “9/11 5K Remembrance Run” at the Antenna Farm on Sept. 11 at 0800, though on-site registration begins at 0700. The race officially begins after colors. Call the base gym at 904-542-2930 with questions.

NSA Naples, Italy

  • From Sept. 9 to 13, climb or walk the equivalent of 110 stories at either Capodichino Fit Zone or Support Site Fitness Forum in Gricignano d’Aversa for the “9/11 Stair Climb Challenge.” Be sure to reserve your time slot at either fitness center front desk. For more details, call 081-811-6721 / DSN 629-6721.

Ramstein AB, Germany

  • The “9/11 Memorial March” will be held on Sept. 11 will begin with a ceremony on 0700 at the Woodlawn Golf Course, with the march immediately following. Participants can choose from a 3k or 6k route, and rucks or backpacks are welcome. The course, however, is not stroller friendly.
