Staying connected: 15 date night ideas for military couples
Tweet

Being a military couple comes with unique challenges, from deployments to relocations. This can make maintaining a strong, healthy relationship seem daunting.

However, the resilience of military couples is unparalleled, and with intentional efforts to stay connected, these relationships can not only survive but thrive.

Setting aside dedicated time for each other is crucial, especially when the time you do have together can be infrequent and unpredictable.

The importance of connection for military couples

For military couples, the stakes are often higher when it comes to maintaining a relationship. The pressure of military duties and the stress of long separations can strain even the strongest bonds.

Research shows that couples who engage in regular, quality activities together have higher levels of satisfaction with each other and have a stronger emotional bond.

Intentional time spent together helps to reinforce the foundation of the relationship and creates cherished memories that can be leaned on during times apart.

Date night ideas for military couples

Whether you’re able to be together physically or are connecting from a distance, here are 15 creative date night ideas tailored for military couples, designed to fit into the unique lifestyle and challenges you might face:

  1. Virtual dinner date: If you’re apart, schedule a dinner date over a video call. Cook the same meal or order the same type of food, and enjoy a meal together virtually. If you’re together, cook together. Simple.
  2. Scavenger hunt: Plan a scavenger hunt that your partner can do on base or at home. Tailor it to include meaningful locations and items that tell the story of your relationship. Grab a bag and start the hunt.
  3. DIY project: Work on a home improvement project together. This not only beautifies your living space but also gives you a shared sense of accomplishment.
  4. Star gazing: Spend a night under the stars, either at a local park or in your backyard. It’s a relaxing way to unwind and connect.
  5. Bucket list planning: Spend an evening planning out your ultimate bucket lists. Share dreams and build plans for future adventures.
  6. Fitness challenge: Engage in a fitness challenge together. Whether it’s a yoga session, a gym workout, or a home fitness challenge, getting active together can be both fun and healthy.
  7. Book club for two: Pick a book to read together and discuss it on your next date night. This can lead to deep conversations and shared insights. If you have different taste in books, do it twice and each gets a turn.
  8. Game night: Have a game night with board games or card games that you both enjoy. If you’re apart, try playing online games together.
  9. Movie marathon: Watch movies from a chosen genre or actor, or catch up on a television series together. Don’t forget the popcorn!
  10. Cooking competition: Challenge each other to a cooking competition where you both make the same dish and then decide whose is best.
  11. Crafting together: Try your hands at crafting something, whether it’s painting, building models, or creating DIY home decor. String Art or Tie Dye anyone?
  12. Dance night: Spend the evening dancing away, either at home or at a local spot. If you’re apart, send each other playlists and dance together over a video call.
  13. Photography challenge: Take your phones and go for a walk, or if you’re apart, choose a theme and share photos on that theme from your day.
  14. Learn something new: Take a class together, whether it’s online or in person. Learning something new together can be both challenging and fun. Bonjour?
  15. Memory lane: Create a digital or physical scrapbook of your relationship milestones. Spend your date night reminiscing and adding to it.

For military couples, each moment spent together is precious. Date nights are a powerful tool in maintaining the connection and vitality of your relationship, helping to bridge the gaps created by time and distance.

Remember, it’s not just about the quantity of time spent together, but the quality of those moments that truly strengthen a relationship.

By incorporating these fun and thoughtful activities into your routine, you can ensure that every minute counts.
